The hidden data inside your PDFs, and how to remove it

Author names, editing software, comments, attachments and scripts can all travel with a PDF. Here is what to strip before sharing a file publicly.

A PDF carries more than what you see on the page. Before you publish a file or send it to someone outside your organization, it is worth knowing what else comes along.

What can be hiding

  • Metadata: author, title, subject, keywords, creating software and dates.
  • Comments and annotations, including resolved or collapsed ones.
  • Embedded file attachments.
  • JavaScript and form actions.
  • Links pointing to internal systems.

See what is there

PDF Info shows a document's metadata, page count and other properties without changing anything. It is a good first step to see what you are dealing with.

Clean it up

Remove Metadata clears the document information fields. Remove Annotations deletes comments, highlights and other markup. Sanitize PDF goes further and removes scripts, attachments and similar active or embedded content in one pass.
